Technology Options for Producing Biocrude Oils

Biocrude oils can also be produced through similar chemical reactions—pyrolysis—as those used in biomass gasification. These processes produce a liquid fuel from biomass instead of a gaseous one. In general, the reactions take place at different temperatures and at different reaction rates compared to gasification.

Biomass Pyrolysis Diagram

The biocrude oils produced from biomass can be used in power systems, such as integrated with gas turbines, in much the same way as biogas produced from biomass.

Several different types of biomass reactors can be used for creating biocrude oils:

  • Fluidized-Bed Reactor
  • Vortex Reactor
  • Tubular Transport Reactor
